‘Til this day the movie Selena is one of my favorite movies. I remember the very first time I watched it was in my Spanish class in high school, and I fell in love. Not only with the movie but with the kind of person that Selena was. Selena tells the story of the Mexican-American singing star who became one of the first women to make it big as a Tejano musician. She was a pioneer for her culture and also in music. The original movie starred Jennifer Lopez as the lead role. I love that movie so much, so you can imagine my excitement when I come across a piece of news today that said Netflix is doing a series based on the late singer’s life and to make things better and more legit Selena’s family is a part of this project so where can it go wrong? I also realized that Selena’s family had a lot of say in the original movie. I think they loved her so much that they don’t want to see her legacy ruined, so they’re a part of every project having to do with Selena, which I think is awesome! I am super excited for this Netflix series and can’t wait!
So about a month ago I watched the Netflix series “Anne with an E,” which is based off of the beloved series by L.M. Montgomery. For those who don’t know the series revolves around an orphan girl named Anne who is taken in by a brother and sister who live on a farm. Anne has such an infectious personality that it’s hard not to fall in love with her. I had never read the series before until now. I’m in the middle of reading while also reading other things. The Netflix series is what got me interested in the first place. Let’s first discuss the Netflix series. From the very first moment I absolutely fell in love with it. I felt like I could relate to Anne because she’s very much a dreamer and she sees the beauty in everything. I thought that was a very endearing quality about her. She romanticized people and objects. It’s like she constantly has stars in her eyes. Of course, there have been reviews on the series and surprisingly to me, there have been a lot of negative reviews. There have been positive reviews also, but the negative reviews really surprised me. The negative reviews have said how the Netflix series veers too much away from the source material and that the Netflix series is much darker than the book. I’m assuming that the reviewers are referring to some of the flashbacks that Anne has when she thinks back to the abuse that she endured while she was living with other people before she lived with the Cuthberts. Personally, I don’t see them as dark. Like one positive reviewer pointed out, it’s real life. The Anne in this series still keeps her familiar charm and precociousness, and she is still the lovable Anne that people have come to know and love because of L.M. Montgomery.
I am so excited for all the things that Stephen King has going on this year! There’s a tv show coming out next month based off of his novel “The Mist” and then “The Dark Tower” is coming out in theaters in August based off of King’s book series and then “IT” is coming out in September! I am extremely excited about all of these. Stephen King seems to be on a roll this year and it’s awesome because all of sudden King is getting thrust back into the spotlight. He’s being recognized again for the brilliance that he is but now a new generation is getting to know who he is. This resurgence may have started when they remade the 2010 version of “Carrie” starring Chloe Moretz as the lead character but now this year it’s like Hollywood is trying to dig up the old King stories and revamp them for a newer generation and I think that’s great! Plain and simple, Stephen King should be known for the genius writer and story teller that he is.
